Which is to say it seems like it might be harder to get House Reps to agree to pass the bill than Senators, but I'm not sure if anyone has actually even done the legislative math or not.» Click here for IST to Local Time Conversion. That plus the Subcommittee that's been reviewing the legislation would actually have to vote to send it to the floor anyway. But if someone did (say, if the retailer association got some Reps to oppose the measure) then they would actually have to have a formal vote and that would definitely slow the process down and make a lot of people question why the chamber is spending time on that. Which might mean that no one in the House would care enough to oppose the measure either. I don't know how many were present but theoretically it could have been 51. On top of this, these kinds of votes generally just require a quorum/simple majority of legislators present, so it's not like 100 Senators formally voted in favor of the proposal. What that means is that no one in the Senate lodged an objection so the Senate officers considered it adopted. So it's interesting because it passed as a unanimous consent vote, which isn't a formal recorded vote. If you disagree with it, I’d contact your local representatives and Congress person. I made this map to mainly show what the timezones will probably end up looking like given the recent senate vote. I think ultimately what will convince people (or not) is what time the sun rises and sets. The rest of my original comment:Īnd yes that’s true, but they are also much farther North. And there’s no reason they couldn’t un make that change. My guess is that the people of Oregon who are on Mountain Time chose to do that for a reason. The IANA time zone identifier for Puerto Rico is America/PuertoRico. My bad! Yes this is an oddity, but it’s one that already exists. MST is the same as PDT, so they would be on the same time even though they’re much farther west.Įdit: misread my own map. I want to clarify one issue here regarding Oregon and Arizona:Īnd if Arizona decides to stay as they are, you’re going to have places in Oregon that are an hour ahead of Arizona, even though they’re 400 miles west of parts of it. government lockdowns and restrictions, pst mst cst est puerto rico utc/zulu 3 pm 6 pm. I would venture a guess that they would stay on MDT. The PST time zone is the third most populated time zone in the US. One of the notable exceptions to what is shown here is the Navajo Nation, which does follow DT despite being sorta/kinda “in” Arizona. Western Texas for example might choose to switch to Mountain Time.Įdit: I forgot to mention this originally - I was not able to account for native territories in this map due to the limitations of the software I used to make it. It wouldn't surprise me if some of the counties farther south choose to switch time zones to the ones further west and (effectively) stay on what used to be their standard time. It seems that there is a process for counties on the borders of time zones to choose to be in one or the other (sometimes the time zone cuts through counties) so there's room for extra change. Again, this is how things are right now anyways it's just not permanent. However, Hawaii does not currently observe DT, so if we assume that the Aleutians follow the majority of the country in switching to permanent DT, then the Aleutians would effectively form their own timezone at UTC-9 and Hawaii would have their own at UTC-10. Hawaii and the (part of) Aleutian Islands currently "share" a time zone, the Hawaii-Aleutian Time Zone (HST UTC-10 & HDT UTC-9). Therefore, it makes sense to me that they would simply merge into one time zone (or Arizona can join the Pacific Daylight Time zone whichever is easiest). The west coast is currently on DT, so it is the same time in Los Angeles as it is in Phoenix. We are currently in DT right now, so the vast majority of people living in the areas on this map would see zero change. This is an updated map for what the US time zones might look like given the US Senate vote to switch to permanent Daylight Time (DT).
